The main aspects of managing sickle cell crisis are giving Oxygen, analgesia e.g. opiates, and IV fluids.. Oxygen helps to counteract the deficient tissue oxygenation caused by vaso-occlusive crises while giving opiates to this patient will relieve the pain, which can be quite severe. Finally, IV fluids should be given to correct his dehydration to increase circulating plasma volume, decrease blood viscosity and thereby reduce the sickling of red blood cells to reduce the length of his sickle cell crisis.
