Underproduction of parathyroid hormone despite low calcium. Much rarer than hyperparathyroidism

Causes

  • DiGeorge syndrome
  • Autosomal dominant hypoparathyoidism
  • Pseudohypoparathyroidism Type 1A - bones + kidney don’t respond to parathyroid hormones - defective parathyroid hormone receptor
  • Surgical damage to the gland after thyroidectomy

Depression due to chronic Hypocalcaemia, would likely accompanied by signs of Hypocalcaemia
