Maturity-onset diabetes of the young refers to any of several hereditary forms of diabetes mellitus caused by mutations in an autosomal dominant gene disrupting Insulin production.

  • Usually strong family history as autosomal dominant unless de novo mutation
  • Typically non-obese and have normal or low body mass index (BMI)
  • Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, stimulates Insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and can be effective in some types of MODY
  • Individuals with MODY generally have some endogenous Insulin production preventing DKA under most circumstances
