- Usually viral (HSV, CMV) or fungal (candida). Can be chemical
- Commonest form caused by reflux of gastric acid/bile
Reflux oesophagitis
- Risk factors: defective lower oesophageal sphincter, hiatus hernia, increase intra-abdo pressure, increased gastric fluid volume
- Leading symptom heart burn
- Leads to ulceration, haemorrhage, perforation, heals by fibrosis
