• Usually viral (HSV, CMV) or fungal (candida). Can be chemical
  • Commonest form caused by reflux of gastric acid/bile

Reflux oesophagitis

  • Risk factors: defective lower oesophageal sphincter, hiatus hernia, increase intra-abdo pressure, increased gastric fluid volume
  • Leading symptom heart burn
  • Leads to ulceration, haemorrhage, perforation, heals by fibrosis
