Causes/Factors

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa and/or Staph aureus

Symptoms

  • Redness, swelling, warmth, pain, fever

Diagnostic Tests

  • Swab of the area and blood cultures before antibiotics
  • Empirical treatment

Management

  1. Antibiotics: Ciprofloxacin + flucloxacillin (or vancomycin if penicillin allergy). Oral or topical.
  2. Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers to manage discomfort.
  3. Warm Compress: Applying a warm, moist cloth to the affected area can help reduce pain and promote healing.
  4. Hygiene: Keeping the area clean and dry to prevent further infection.

Complications/red Flags

  • Spread of Infection: If left untreated, Cellulitis can spread to nearby tissues.
  • Abscess Formation: Collection of pus may require drainage.
  • Systemic Infection: Rarely, severe infections can lead to bloodstream infection (Sepsis).
